Author: Julie McElwain
Publisher: Pegasus Books
Release Date: April 11th 2016
Beautiful and brilliant, Kendra Donovan is a rising star at the FBI. Yet her path to professional success hits a speed bump during a disastrous raid where half her team is murdered, a mole in the FBI is uncovered and she herself is severely wounded. As soon as she recovers, she goes rogue and travels to England to assassinate the man responsible for the deaths of her teammates.
While fleeing from an unexpected assassin herself, Kendra escapes into a stairwell that promises sanctuary but when she stumbles out again, she is in the same place – Aldrich Castle – but in a different time: 1815, to be exact.
Mistaken for a lady’s maid hired to help with weekend guests, Kendra is forced to quickly adapt to the time period until she can figure out how she got there; and, more importantly, how to get back home. However, after the body of a young girl is found on the extensive grounds of the county estate, she starts to feel there’s some purpose to her bizarre circumstances. Stripped of her twenty-first century tools, Kendra must use her wits alone in order to unmask a cunning madman.
MY TAKE ON THIS BOOK
I have to say- GORGEOUS COVER!!! The smoke/cloud swirling around her as she is caught between two time periods<3<3. Well you guys know I’m a sucker for anything time travel so I didn’t hesitate to pick this book for my reading list and the blurb sounded so intriguing .
Now for the book, It starts out with our main character Kendra Donovan, FBI agent working on a case to uncover the biggest mobster of the 21st century. The whole FBI concept based main character was new for me and I wanted to know more about the character’s journey throughout the book. During a raid to catch the mobster, the whole thing goes downhill as a mole is discovered. This leads to half her team getting killed off and she is severely wounded. She decides to avenge their deaths by travelling to England to kill the main assassin.
There in England, she goes rogue and during her plan to kill the assassin something unexpected happens ( you need to read the book for that) and she escapes through a secret tunnel but instead of coming out of the tunnel in her own time period, she comes out of the tunnel but 200 years back in time. She then has to act like a maid to adapt to that time period. One day, the body of a dead girl shows up on the beach. Based on how the girl was murdered( Jack the Ripper style), Kendra realizes that there is a serial killer on loose.
Kendra is a brilliant FBI agent and would do anything for her team. She is a genius with computers and wants to prove to her superiors that she is worthy of being in the field. I really liked how she wasn’t like other women who travel back in time and immediately fall in love with a guy. She does her best to catch the killer when new bodies are discovered. As for the romance, Kendra has feelings for the main guy and I wanted to see the actual romance development between the two characters. It was like reading only selected romantic moments. I wanted more of their scenes in this book.
I actually expected more get your hands dirty/ physical work from Kendra but she took charge of all the clue deduction work. I was kinda disappointed with that. I felt the story was kinda slow in the first half but not boring. The killings were graphic and the author has done a great job in describing the killings in detail. The story was very intense and there are some dark moments so don’t expect happy-happy story line cause you’re not gonna get that.
On the whole, I did enjoy this book, it was a new kind of time travel book for me and fans of Jack the Ripper will definitely enjoy this book!! Can’t wait to read the sequel:)
