Gemma has been in and out of hospitals since she was born. ‘A sickly child’, her lonely life to date has revolved around her home, school and one best friend, Alice. But when she discovers her father’s connection to the top secret Haven research facility, currently hitting the headlines and under siege by religious fanatics, Gemma decides to leave the sanctuary she’s always known to find the institute and determine what is going on there and why her father’s name seems inextricably linked to it.
Amidst the frenzy outside the institute’s walls, Lyra – or number 24 as she is known as at Haven – and a fellow experimental subject known only as 72, manage to escape. Encountering a world they never knew existed outside the walls of their secluded upbringing , they meet Gemma and, as they try to understand Haven’s purpose together, they uncover some earth-shattering secrets that will change the lives of both girls forever…
MY TAKE ON THIS BOOK
One of my most highly anticipated October books. What drew me to this book was that this is a two in one book(Yayy!!!:D). Two POVs on each side of the book coming together in the middle. You can read this book in three ways
- Read Lyra first
- Read Gemma first
- Alternate chapters between Lyra and Gemma
I chose the 3rd option:D since I wanted the simultaneous storyline of both characters.
Lyra aka 24 is a replica, an experimental subject at the Heaven ( a research Institute which is a mystery to the outside world). She is one among many replicas. She is different from the other replicas as she is very curious and begins to question everything she knows. She manages to escape from Heaven along with 72 ( male replica) when a fire breaks out at Heaven.
Lyra’s character more interesting but I felt really sad for her by the way she was treated at Heaven and when she actually believed that she would be safe at Heaven than the outside world. She adapts quickly to the world outside Heaven. The romance between Lyra and — (read the book:p) is sooo sweet. Both experiencing a roller coaster of emotions for the very first time.
Gemma, a rich kid who has been sick her entire life is very self-conscious about her weight. She thinks that she is fat and people don’t want to be associated with her. When a certain incident occurs which makes Gemma discover her father’s connection to Heaven, she sets on a road trip to find out the mystery surrounding Heaven. On the way, Gemma meets Jake and Pete who help in uncovering the truth. Eventually, Gemma and Lyra cross paths.
Gemma is shy, insecure and wants to enjoy life as she has been under house arrest all her life due to her health conditions. I loved how Gemma was more understanding of what Lyra was going through. The beginning romance between Gemma and —- was cute and funny but I felt it progressed too quickly.
This book is page turner and each chapter was more interesting than the last one which is a plus point. There was some mystery which was predictable and some which came as a surprise. The ending wasn’t as strong as I would’ve liked it to be but I’m excited for sequel and to see what’s in store for Lyra and Gemma.
Lovee the way Lauren Oliver has presented this book to us. The unique two-sided book and giving the readers a choice to read the book in whichever way they want(which is soo cool!!!). This book is definitely a page-turner and I can’t wait for the sequel!!!:)
