MY TAKE ON THIS BOOK
Cover of the book- gorgeous!!That flaming rose looks soo beautiful. Now for the plot. The book opens with our main character, Henrietta Howel, an orphan and who is a teacher at the Brimthorn School for Girls taking one of her students to the headmaster where they are questioned by Master Agrippa(sorcerer) regarding the mysterious fire incident. Henrietta is the one who caused the fire and has been keeping her power a secret from everyone except her best friend, Rook. Her powers get exposed when she tries to help Rook when they are attacked by one of the Ancients( monsters). She is then later brought to London to train with Her Majesty’s Sorcerers.
I really liked the word building in this book. Jessica has created a dark and mysterious world with the Ancients. I liked how each creature was described. Henrietta is smart, beautiful and would do anything for the people she loves. She is another bad ass heroine.
Henrietta later discovers that she is a magician and not a sorcerer. She starts training with another magician( one who knows her father) to develop her powers in order to survive the sorcerer training so she can get commended by the queen. The book covers her training with the magician, her interactions with her fellow sorcerers, Rook’s health and her dreams.
The story went at a normal pace and was maintained until the end of the book. There are many unanswered questions. The minus for me was that there weren’t any surprises in the book that made me gasp or any twists which had me on the edge.
As for the romance, there is like a love chain going on between Henrietta-Rook-Magnus-Blackwood.
This is the first book that I’ve read where all the characters are a mystery and I hope we learn more about their backstory and secrets in the sequels
If you like books with magic, mystery, darkness, monsters and fantasy I’m sure you would love this book!!
